“Tell me about yourself”

I always find it interesting how people choose to answer the question “Tell me a bit about yourself.” It often makes people feel a bit awkward or exposed. And often people answer in a way that reflects what they think people want to hear or might need to know, rather than what they truly want to tell others about themselves. If we pay attention though, in those moments that someone quickly reels off a few snippets about their life, or things they consider to be defining features about themselves, then we find out what is important to them.

Perhaps they start with their job role, or their place in the family. Perhaps they tell you a little about their hobbies or major achievements. Maybe they tell you about their background, or a mini life history of how they have ended up where they are today. Dig a little deeper and you might see their values, their strengths and their passions.

I could answer the question like this: I am Jess, the eldest of 6 children, mother to one and auntie to four. In my professional life I am a healthcare scientist but even before Burnout to Bliss, I had always found a way to be involved with coaching, mentoring and training. I have lived a few places, most notably Myanmar for 6 months. I am obsessed with fancy dress, 3D crafts and writing. And if I can combine all of these with a weekend away with my friends in the form of a home-made murder mystery/escape room game, then I am in my happy place!

I wonder what else you could find out about me from those few sentences?

What you could know is that family and friends are the centre of my universe. Above all I take my role as a big sister and as a Mum as my absolute top priority. I know how to apply myself to achieve my goals – my professional role came after an early career pivot from research to healthcare. Creativity is nourishment to me, and I have learned that if I don’t make room for it in my life, I am one unhappy bunny. I need a promise of adventure, even if these days that’s just short weekends away in the rusty old campervan Lenny. And finally, I need to be in service to others to feel like there is value to my days. That’s why I started Burnout to Bliss and why I am delighted to be able to share this program with you.

How do you answer when people ask you “Tell me a bit about yourself”. What are you really trying to tell them?
