Did you know there are Seven Types of Rest

Updated: May 23

I never knew there were seven types of rest, and that you need to sample them all to feel truly restored. We often think of rest as just getting a good night's sleep or taking a holiday. But it seems the truth is, rest goes far beyond that! It was actually kind of fun once I learned this little fact -it became a bit of a game trying to incorporate them all into my life. It almost felt like a being a child given permission to go play…. So, let's dive into these seven types of rest, and see if we can’t get you trying out something new!

Physical Rest. You will know this one - the most familiar type of rest of course - sleep and relaxation. This is about giving your body the downtime it needs to repair and recover. Examples include getting a full night's sleep, power naps, or simply splaying on the sofa after a long day.

Mental Rest. Perhaps this one is a familial concept too. Our minds are constantly working, and without a break it can lead to mental fatigue – you know that feeling after a particularly intense day at work, or study session or dreaded life admin. To recharge your brain, choose activities that allow your brain to switch off, such as meditation, short breaks from work or simply allowing your mind to wander.

Emotional Rest. This is one we can sometimes overlook.. Life can be emotionally draining, especially when dealing with stress, conflicts, or heavy emotions. Even just reading the news today can feel like an emotional marathon. Spend time with people that are easy company, put any feelings on paper as a way to offload them from your brain, or seek support from a therapist to provide your emotions with the attention they deserve.

Social Rest. Yes, even extroverts need a break from social interactions sometimes! Carve out "me time" to recharge your social batteries. Take up a solo hobby, go for a walk, or spend a quiet evening at home.

Sensory Rest. Our senses are bombarded by stimuli every day, even more so in this day and age. Find solace in sensory rest by dimming the lights, reducing noise, or creating a peaceful space at home. A warm bath, nature sounds, or noise-cancelling headphones can help, anything that gives you that “ahhh” feeling. Hint: turn off the screens!

Creative Rest. This one is my absolute favourite. Do something totally different from your day-to-day work. Take a break from problem-solving by doing something entirely different—watching a comedy show, cooking a new recipe, or visiting an art gallery. Think of this as permission to Play! Imagine that feeling of just doing this simply for the joy of it, not worrying about what you produce or achieve – that is creative rest.

Spiritual Rest. This one can mean different things to different people. If you are, religious or spiritual, are you making time to connect with your faith? If not religious, you will still benefit from connecting with your inner self and your sense of purpose. Meditation, prayer, mindfulness, or spending time in nature can provide the spiritual rest that feeds your soul.

Remember, your rest needs may change from day to day or season to season. Listen to your body and mind, and to give yourself permission to rest in the way that feels most rejuvenating for you! So, take a moment today to assess which types of rest you need the most, and make a commitment fit it in this week. Your future self will thank you for it!
